The Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East. It came to an end on 29 May 1453, when its capital (Constantinople) fell to the Ottoman Turks.
Note: the answer on the question sheet was "The Roman Empire". This was a printing error – the answer had been changed, but an earlier version of the document was printed by mistake.
